“Innocence gone.

Never take friendship personal

If you can’t hold yourself together, why should I hold you now?”

Anberlin

Anberlin is an awesome band. They get it.

And this song stays relevant in my life, no matter how much I wish it didn’t.

Anberlin – Never Take Friendship Personal

I remember when…

19 05 2008

Cd’s are cool. Computers are great. Websites and the internet are even better. iPods/mp3 players are the best. But what do I miss?

  • I miss watching my Dad put a record on the turntable.
  • I miss the scratches that gave his record collection a certain soul and character beyond the actual song being played.
  • I miss cassette decks.
  • I miss sitting in my room, drawing or reading…just waiting for that new hot joint to come on the radio.
  • I miss hearing that new song on the radio, getting excited and jumping up off my bed to go press the record button on my dual cassette deck tape player.
  • I miss real mixtapes. Not even mix CDs…mixtapes.
  • I miss giving a mixtape to someone to let them know how you felt about them, or to remind them of the good times.

Muxtape, podcasts and all those things are wonderful, but there’s nothing like giving/receiving a mixtape. Knowing that someone put a certain amount of thought and a whole lot of effort into that creation was something special. And can’t even be touched by a website. Your mouse goes: click, click, click, and done. Not even close.

I miss my childhood. Those were the really good days. And the crazy thing is, it wasn’t that long ago…a quarter of my life has passed.

We just don’t live long enough…

Fun + Eclectic

I love music. But even more, I love sharing music with others.

My Morning JacketMy Morning Jacket

This band is my hippie guilty pleasure. I learned about this band back in 2003. During Block Party my freshman year, I was an eager 18-year-old trying to get her hands on every free item she could come across. At the NUVO table, there were 3 CD samplers and even though I’m pretty sure the sign said “take one”, I took all three (Yes, I’m awesome). One of these samplers included this song:

My Morning Jacket – Run Thru

I don’t know why, but I instantly fell in love with My Morning Jacket. I got as much of their music as I could find; I became slightly obsessed. So much so, that at Lollapalooza 2006, I sat in the grass, the lone black girl, listening to My Morning Jacket play to a sparse yet dedicated crowd of fans.

Here’s some new music from them:

My Morning Jacket – Evil Urges

Ladytron

LadytronElectro is one of the (many) subgenres of electronic music that I enjoy. Electroclash, electro-breaks, electrorock…whatever the sub-subgenre, I generally like it all. Ladytron is one group that creates great electro that is well-executed—in other words doesn’t sound like that awful tone that you hear when you call number and get a fax machine on the other end.

Here’s the song that got me into them:

Ladytron – True Mathematics

And here’s a new track from them:

Ladytron – Black Cat

AtmosphereAtmosphere

Everyone loves Atmosphere. (And if you don’t, you should.)

Atmosphere entered my music repertoire in the summer of 2003, right before attending Butler. There were two songs, from the album, Lucy Ford, that drew me to them:

1. Atmosphere – Aspiring Sociopath

2. Atmosphere – Don’t Ever Fucking Question That
And my favorites from the latest album, When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold:

Atmosphere – Shoulda Known

Atmosphere – Wild Wild Horses (I love the 2nd verse.)

World’s Most Important 6-second Drum Loop

I’ll warn you, it’s long, but if you have ANY interest in music, watch/listen.  At least through 13 mins.  You’ll enjoy it.

M.I.A. – Hit That

13 05 2008

“Tap tap that bed to the wall…”

So apparently I’m late on this one…like a year late. But it’s new to me, so it gets it’s own post.

This song, “Hit That” is crazy. And despite the fact that it’s not the typical party-beats-yet-deeply-political-lyrics M.I.A. song, I absolutely love it. Enjoy.

M.I.A. – Hit That

Oh, and here’s a truly new one.

Black Girl + White Schools = Miller Lite Carb Day

7 05 2008

STP @ Carb Day 2008I desperately want to go to this year’s Miller Lite Carb Day Concert. My #1 favorite rock band is playing this year–STONE TEMPLE PILOTS!! What’s even better about this concert is that STP broke up about 5 years ago–aaaand– Scott Weiland is in and out of rehab so much that this might be one of the last times he’s seen alive. (I hope not, but his addiction has the best of him.)

So, in celebration of the wonderful reunion of STP, my middle school and high school memories and general rock ‘n’ roll wonderfulness, here’s one of my favorite STP songs.

I believe in SANTOGOLD.

Santi White aka Santogold

I’m in love with Santi White. And you should be too. If you’ve cruised by my Myspace page anytime in the last 5 months, you might have heard a song by Santogold (just depends on what song played from my music player). She has her dedicated fans and new ones that’ll hear her at an M.I.A. or Gnarls Barkley concert. But here’s her first break into the mainstream. Not like she’ll stay there, but a commercial can do wonders for a career (Feist and iPod; Sara Bareilles and Rhapsody and I would say Cool Kids, but it’s not their time yet).

Bud Light Lime & Santogold song “Creator”

And here are two tracks off of her debut album, Santogold. Released April 29th.
