Junior M.I.A.

13 10 2008

At the Diesel Rock Circus show this past weekend, M.I.A. revealed a baby bump that’s obviously been in the making for a while. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Maya alluded to the little one:

I’m kind of putting on weight. That could be it. I haven’t made it to the counter yet to buy a test. But when I do, I’ll let you know.

All I have to say is…WTF? Ok and maybe a big CONGRATS! I sincerely believe the world needs more Maya Arulpragasams. Or whatever her name will be after the wedding.

Kudos to Filthy Rag

13 06 2008

So this has been out for about six months now, but in case you haven’t seen this, here it is.

This mix album of mashups features some of the hottest indie singles of 2007. Download the whole album at Stereogum or take a listen to some of my favorites.

Familial Relations: Arulpragasam

19 05 2008

If you’re somebody, then you’ll recognize that last name.

Given name: Mathangi Arulpragasam, also known as, M.I.A.  Well, talent runs in the fam.  Maya has an older sister, Kali Arulpragasam.  Kali is an artist and has a jewelry line called SuperFertile.  It’s jewelry with something to say.  The art of the Arulpragasam family is never just because, there’s ALWAYS a point.

For the latest line, Kali designed large…necklace-medallion-sculptures based off of the culture of war-torn countries such as Sudan, Haiti and her native Sri Lanka.

Left: Haiti; Right: Iraq

Left: Sri Lanka; Right: Sudan

The Jewelry: SuperFertile

Rihanna Covers M.I.A.

13 05 2008

What a lame attempt. The song’s pitched up and the gunshots are even more lame than Rihanna’s singing.

But it’s ok Rihanna, I still love you.  I just love M.I.A. more.

M.I.A. – Hit That

13 05 2008

“Tap tap that bed to the wall…”

So apparently I’m late on this one…like a year late. But it’s new to me, so it gets it’s own post.

This song, “Hit That” is crazy. And despite the fact that it’s not the typical party-beats-yet-deeply-political-lyrics M.I.A. song, I absolutely love it. Enjoy.
